Dear Editor:
I was driving towards Duncan on the highway just before the farmers market going North reading the billboards as I went, when I saw a sign, it has three women in bikinis on a dock.
I think this is incredibly inappropriate. It was offensive to me being one of the female gender. After discussing with my friends and co-workers, it was agreed that this is a sexist way of selling a product. I am simply amazed in this day and age that:
A) Companies would promote a product with this type of advertising
B) Advertising companies would allow such ads on their billboards
C) That city council would allow this in their jurisdiction and
D) Ministry of Transportation would allow this on the Trans Canada Highway.
I'm not against advertising, I just think that there are more appropriate ways of selling your product other than using sexy looking females as a selling feature.

Re : Inappropriate Sexy Billboard ?
I’m glad we live in a free country as people are all allowed to have opinions. Although I doubt most people would find the billboard inappropriate. After reading Mrs. Wilson letter we thought you might want to understand the simple story behind the billboard. Surespan Structures is a local Duncan company that primarily builds forestry bridges. It employees from 60-100 people and is located on Hwy 18. With the ever decreasing forest industry “in this day and age” we have found ourselves needing to diversify our product line. Fortunately, we have used our strength and built a concrete float system that is durable, affordable, and environmentally sound. Almost every lake on this island is being environmentally poisoned by people using treated lumber on their docks. Our problem is we need to make customers aware of our solution. We chose billboards. We simply went to a Lake Cowichan float customer of ours and asked him to organize a few of his kids to come and take photos on the dock. We took hundreds of pictures containing girls and boys. This billboard represented the best picture. We consciously chose regular local girls just to prevent someone from being offended. We agree the girls are beautiful and they are wearing bikinis but this was their normal swim wear that can be seen on any beach. We are sorry if you were offended however we are proud of our local business and we would like the communities support in our attempt to diversify rather that labeled “incredibly inappropriate”
We have placed a vote counter on our website with the billboard to truly measure public opinion. If public opinion says it is offensive we will employ local artist to paint attire on the girls. Please vote at out website at WWW.SUREFLOAT.COM
